Coffee morning launch

Issue 632

A CHARITY that started life as an online swap-shop but now also tackles financial hardship and social isolation is hosting its first coffee morning in Dewsbury next week.

One Good Turn, which was founded in Huddersfield by Dewsbury-born mother-of-two Sophia Crawshaw, sees volunteers and online members list their own unwanted household items such as clothes or baby equipment, on the group’s Facebook page.

If fellow users are interested in claiming them, they add their names underneath and a recipient is drawn from a hat.

Now a registered charity that’s supported by Kirklees Council, OGT hold regular coffee mornings for members to meet up for a chat and to pick up their items.

The first North Kirklees coffee morning takes place at Dewsbury’s Options Centre, on George Street, on Thursday from 10am to 12pm.

Since its founding in 2011 dozens of volunteers have become involved in the OGT project and more than £41,000 has been raised through raffles and events – cash which has been ploughed back into expanding the charity’s reach.

OGT now also offer a referral service for people who are struggling financially, allowing them to access free white goods, furniture, carpets and other large items from partner organisations.
