THE public have been given a glimpse of the inner workings of Cleckheaton Town Hall’s clock following major repairs.
The clock, which had stood at 12noon since last summer, was recast with specially made parts.
Kirklees Council’s Spen Valley Area Committee put up £3,900 to commission bespoke clockmakers Smith of Derby.
A row between councillors and the authority over who should pay for the work saw the project delayed.
Kirklees instead opted to pay £5,000 for decorative gold leaf on the refurbished clock at Dewsbury Town Hall.
So the area committee coughed up the funds, plus a further £2,000 for repairs to the clock in Heckmondwike town centre.
Lib Dem leader Coun Kath Pinnock said: “Time no longer stands still in Cleckheaton. It’s shameful that Kirklees didn’t want to repair it.”
