CELEBRITY headteacher Jonny Mitchell presented awards at Ossett’s civic dinner last Saturday.
The Educating Yorkshire star was at the town’s community centre for the sell-out event. Mr Mitchell, headteacher at Thornhill Community Academy, presented gongs on behalf of the Ossett Civic Trust.
Residents were asked to nominate those who have made the biggest contributions to life in Ossett over the last year.
Winners included the Brickhouse Youth Club, Gawthorpe Maypole Committee and the Ossett Brewery.
Former Lib Dem councillor Alec Metcalfe received a lifetime achievement award for his long service to the town.
Known as ‘Mr Ossett’, he was a councillor in spells over more than 40 years and was on the civic trust.
Mayor of Wakefield Coun Janet Holmes was joined by High Sheriff of West Yorkshire Virginia Lloyd at the event.
Batley-based historian Malcolm Haigh BEM and deputy Lieutenant of West Yorkshire David Dinmore also attended.
High Sheriff Mrs Lloyd said: “We were so impressed and heartened by this wonderful community event.
“With such a diverse cross section of people turning out it should be a beacon to other communities in our region.”
