EVENTS are to be held in Dewsbury town centre with a £10,000 grant officials and volunteers have won as a ‘consolation’ for a failed Mary Portas pilot bid.
The Government cash will allow Town Team members to do some of the things that were part of their original application for £100,000 of Government funding from a scheme supported by TV star Mary Portas.
Festivals and children’s activities will be organised with the aim of bringing more people into the town centre and, in theory, boost trade.
Dewsbury MP Simon Reevell challenged Kirklees Council to match the money and said: “I welcome this funding. My challenge to Kirklees is for them to offer matched funding so the Town Team will then have £20,000 to invest.”
The Town Team also want ideas for putting empty shops to community use, such as the successful cinema project currently being run by volunteers at Yorkshire House.
Suggestions can be made at their next meeting, which is at the town hall from 7pm on Tuesday November 6.
