Dennis, 82, is home blaze rescue hero

Issue 515

An 82YEAROLD MAN has been hailed for helping rescue an elderly neighbour from a fire at a Ravensthorpe retirement complex last Thursday.
Dennis White raced into action when a blaze started in the bedroom of a ground floor flat occupied by 84yearold Joan Marie Illingworth.
He and scheme manager Naminder Sian led her to safety at around 8.45pm at the Sadeh Lokowned Kashmir House complex in Church Street.
Fire and ambulance crews were quickly on the scene, with both Mr White and Mrs Illingworth being taken to Dewsbury Distict Hospital for smoke inhalation.
Mr White was discharged later on Thursday night, though Mrs Illingworth was kept in overnight for observation and then discharged.
Sadeh Lok, which is Punjabi for 'our people', is a housing association that runs sheltered housing schemes across West and South Yorkshire.
Ms Sian has worked at Kashmir House for more than a decade and lives in the flat next door to Mrs Illingworth.
Sadeh Lok chief executive Paul Dolan said: “We're very proud of both Naminder and Dennis for their heroics. They saved Mrs Illingworth's life."
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
