50% increase in Batley car thefts

Issue 512

DRIVERS are being warned not to leave valuables in their cars after thefts from vehicles around Batley increased by more than 50 per cent.
There have been 17 such incidents across January and February, mostly on Bradford Road between Hick Lane and Town Street.
The figure is up from 11 thefts in the same period last year and includes three thefts in Mill Road that all happened last Tuesday.
Between 6.30pm and midnight, three unoccupied cars had a satnav, Sony radio and and £2 in change respectively stolen.
All three vehicles had their windows smashed. The theft of just £2 shows how some criminals will cause considerable damage to get at any cash or property.
Sgt Samantha Carter of the Batley NPT said: “Satnavs, radios, bags, coats, mobiles and any amount of money can be easy pickings for thieves.
“While we are increasing our patrols in the area, we are also urging people not to make their cars easy targets. Check your car before leaving it. If you can see something on display, so can a thief.”
