Karen Matthews set for freedom

Issue 503

NOTORIOUS kidnapper Karen Matthews is planning to move to Cyprus with a wealthy secret admirer, reports claim.
Matthews, set to be released from Derbyshire’s Foston Hall prison in April, has been exchanging letters with a supposedly rich suitor.
A national newspaper claimed on Sunday that he contacted her first after seeing her pictures in the media. He is thought to have told the Dewsbury Moor mumofseven that he would like to “stroll along a beach” with her.
Matthews, 36, was jailed for arranging the kidnapping of her own daughter, Shannon, supposedly to claim £50,000 in reward money.
She was given an eightyear prison sentence in January 2009.
Matthews will also soon be allowed unsupervised trips out of prison.
But she will not be allowed to live abroad permanently and only shorter unsupervised visits overseas would be permitted.
Matthews, who was jailed with coaccused Michael Donovan, is reported to be terrified of being released. She fears being recognised and attacked, even though she has lost three stones and dyed her hair whilst in prison.
One of West Yorkshire Police’s biggestever operations ended when Shannon, now 12, was found secreted under a bed in Donovan’s Batley Carr flat. The Westmoor Junior School pupil had gone missing on her way home from school in February 2008.
It led to a 24day police manhunt which cost taxpayers £3.2m. Matthews still maintains she was innocent.
Both she and Donovan were sentenced to eight years for kidnap, false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice.
