Browns set to move to Mirfield 25

Issue 484

AN ENGINEERING firm has announced major plans to build its new headquarters on Mirfield Moor.
David Brown, the wellknown gear technology manufacturer currently based in Huddersfield, announced on Thursday afternoon that it intends to move a large part of its operations to a new “highly sustainable” development at the controversial Mirfield25 site.
The 150yearold Huddersfield firm, which once owned Aston Martin and was famous for its tractors, needs to expand from its historic base at Park Works in Lockwood.
Wind turbine parts now form a major part of David Brown’s order book – and Mirfield Moor is thought to be an excellent place to develop their new green technology further.
The land at Leeds Road already has planning consent for commercial use, despite a long fight by protestors to keep Mirfield Moor free from development.
The 10acre site will host a global centre of excellence for gear manufacture, a new ‘David Brown Wind Innovation Centre’ as well as office space for global support functions such as sales, communications, legal, finance and business unit personnel.
Before the firm submits its planning application for detailed consent it is inviting residents to attend a full public consultation and exhibition next Friday (August 12) between 11am and 7pm at Christ the King church in Battyeford.
Representatives from David Brown and developers First Industrial will be available to answer questions and take comments.
More than 270 of the 450 staff currently based in Huddersfield will move to the Mirfield site, with the old base at Lockwood reduced in size from 17 to six acres.
Construction is scheduled to begin in mid 2012 and should be completed by the end of 2013.
David Brown’s general manager Wayne Ball said: “We are delighted to announce our plans for the new Centre of Excellence and Wind Innovation Centre at Mirfield as well as our plans to update and refurbish part of the current site.
“The new and updated facilities will enable a stepchange in driving productivity and operational effectiveness for David Brown and the creation of new jobs in the local community.
“The new site will allow David Brown to remain in the heart of the community, as we extend our global reach through specialist research, development and manufacturing capabilities from improved facilities.”
