£300,000 for new 'greenway'

Issue 446

A NEW £300,000 greenway is to be developed along a disused railway line to link Dewsbury with Ossett.
It will provide a trafficfree walking and cycling link from Dewsbury town centre to Ossett via Savile Town and Earlsheaton.
The route will also join up with similar schemes, like the Spen Valley Greenway, to connect with the rest of Kirklees.
Kirklees Council and environmental charity Sustrans will start work in February.
Phase one will run from Dewsbury town centre to the Sands Lane playing fields using old railway embankments and a viaduct.
It will provide a route to Preston Street in Earlsheaton and to the canal towpath of the Dewsbury Cut in Savile Town.
A second phase, running between the town halls in Dewsbury and Ossett, depends on funding from Wakefield Council.
Coun Paul Kane, chairman of Dewsbury Regeneration Board, said: “Choosing to walk or cycle will bring health benefits for residents.”
