7,000 potholes patched up but no more

Issue 415

COUNCIL chiefs in Kirklees have given up repairing the districts 10,000 potholes.

Januarys Big Freeze left many roads badly damaged and Kirklees Council has now decided some are beyond repair. The council put extra repair crews out and have filled 7,000 holes so far. Now they have decided there is no point patching up when a proper resurfacing job is needed.

The councils Cabinet has earmarked £3.5 million for resurfacing and councillors will decide on Tuesday which are most in need. Ten highways crews have been working roundtheclock on 1,200 miles of roads.

Councillors will use these criteria to decide which roads should be resurfaced: the extent and severity of damage; the safety risk posed to drivers; whether the road is well used, particularly by public transport; and how resurfacing will improve the area generally.

Cabinet member for highways Coun David Sheard said: We need to have another look at the repair programme and give adequate priority to routes most in need of urgent repair. To report a pothole call the Council hotline on 0800 731 8765 or visit www.kirklees.gov.uk/ answers/road_maintenance/potholes.shtml.
