Brother of "Mr Sparkles" is cleared by jury

Issue 403

PRISON governor Mahmood Yaqoob, brother of Mr Sparkles, has been cleared of deception and mortgage fraud.

Mahmood, 36, of Sackville Street, Ravensthorpe, had been accused of inflating his income to secure loans on the familys £1 million Mirfield mansion.

He denied two charges of obtaining money by deception and one of fraud and was found not guilty by a jury after a weeklong trial at Leeds Crown Court.

Three months ago he went on trial with Mr Sparkles alias Azam Yaqoob but the jury was unable to reach a verdict.

Azam, who used to run the Mr Sparkles car wash in Webster Hill, Dewsbury, was jailed for twoandahalf years for theft, fraud and money laundering.

The jury could not decide on Mahmoods case and a retrial was ordered.

Mahmood, a senior wing governor at Armley Jail in Leeds at the time of his arrest, was said to have taken out mortgages to buy and renovate a modest mock Tudor house in Huddersfield Road, Mirfield.

The previous trial was told how Azam, 40, was effectively the owner of the house which was extended to become a ninebedroomed mansion.

A mortgage application for £400,000 from the Birmingham Midshires was submitted in Mahmoods name.

Mahmood, then employed by Kirklees Racial Equality Council on a salary of £23,000, said he gave all the correct details to someone else. He signed the form but it was filled in by a broker. His earnings were stated at £85,000.

Mahmood told the court: I thought I was signing true forms for a legitimate mortgage. I did not deceive anybody.
