Bat attacker jailed for two years

Issue 355

A VIOLENT thug was locked up for two years for repeatedly smashing a mans head with a baseball bat so hard it broke.
Izhar Khalid, 20, of Lees Holm, Thornhill Lees, then scrambled to try and piece the bat back together so he could continue the beating.
Leeds Crown Court was told how Khalid attacked Ansar Rehman in an alleyway in August 12 last year.
When police found the shattered baseball bat they found clumps of Mr Rehmans hair and skin embedded in it.
Khalid admitted wounding and was sentenced to two years in a Young Offenders Institution.
Mr Rehman spent two days in hospital and needed 13 stitches in head wounds.
Mr Michael Collins, prosecuting, said Khalid told police he had been drinking heavily before the attack, which happened near his home.
For Khalid, Mr Michael Greenhalgh said alcohol played a part and added: He was experimenting with drink which is unusual.
He grew up in a Muslim household where drinking is not allowed. He began drinking with friends and drank rather too much.
Sentencing Khalid, Recorder Neil Davey QC told him: You struck him (Mr Rehman) so many times with the bat it broke.
Once it broke you went searching for a piece of broken bat so you could strike him again.
The broken bat had clumps of your victims hair and skin on it.
Khalid had previous convictions for assault, possessing a knife, battery and dishonesty, the court heard.
