FREE stalls are on offer at markets in Dewsbury, Batley and Heckmondwike in a bid to boost trade.
The spots are available from next Saturday until July 7 as part of a national ‘Love Your Market’ campaign.
It was inspired by a report shopping guru Mary Portas carried out for the Government, which recommended a £10perstall promotion.
Many councils have taken up the initiative, though Kirklees has gone a step further by offering some free pitches. These are as follows:
• Heckmondwike Eight stallls on Saturday June 30;
• Dewsbury Four stalls on Saturday June 30;
• Heckmondwike Five stalls on Tuesday July 3;
• Dewsbury Eight stalls on Wednesday July 4;
• Batley Six stalls on Friday July 6;
• Heckmondwike Eight stalls on Saturday July 7;
• Dewsbury Four stalls on Saturday July 7.
Spots must be booked at least a week in advance, and free insurance for the day is also on offer.
But applications will only be accepted from traders selling goods not currently available at the markets.
An information event for new traders is due to be held at Queensgate Market in Huddersfield today (Fri) from 11am to 2pm.
Groups including the West Yorkshire Enterprise Agency and the Prince’s Trust are among those exhibiting.
Kirklees Council cabinet member for regeneration Coun Peter McBride said the authority was intrigued by the Portas report.
“A number of our markets are already full to capacity so we looked at a more innovative approach,” he said.
“By offering free stalls and free insurance we can give potential new stallholders a riskfree taster of running a market stall.”
