Oakwell receives financial boost from paint programme

EVENTS and activities at Birstall’s Oakwell Hall have been given a £10,000 boost by a paint firm.

Birstall-based PPG Industries recently presented Oakwell with a donation from their Global Charitable Contributions Fund.

Coun Peter O’Neill (Lab, Batley West), Kirklees cabinet member for communities and leisure, received the £10,000 cheque on behalf of Oakwell Hall.

He said: “This generous donation from PPG Industries will be used to support the ‘Magic Mondays’ programme of free activity days at Oakwell.

“It will also support some of the new interpretation work that will take place in the hall at Oakwell as part of a major Arts Council-funded refurbishment of the hall and visitor centre later this year.”

Huddersfield Road-based PPG Industries, who manufacture paint brands Johnstone’s and Leyland, have been a regular supporter of Oakwell Hall and Red House Museum.

Last year they donated nearly £20,000 to Oakwell and Red House.

The donation was used to support a range of community events such as Yorkshire Day, the brass band programme in the gardens of Oakwell Hall and Red House and a programme of activity days for local children.

The donation also helped Red House buy a new stair carpet and paid for some much needed structural conservation work at Oakwell Hall.

Veronica Horsfall, communications officer for PPG Industries, added: “The objective of PPG’s Charitable Contributions Programme is to enhance the quality of life in those communities where PPG Industries has a major presence throughout the world.

“We are delighted to have provided support to Oakwell Hall for the second year running.

“It is exciting that our business is helping to fund the interpretation project as this will most certainly help local people to understand more about the history of the hall, whilst attracting even more visitors to the park over the coming years.”
