Oakwell Hall set to benefit from paint firm's scheme

THE FUTURE is glossy for a Birstall firm thanks to a new shop and support for community activities.

PPG Architectural Coatings, best known for brands such as Johnstone’s Paint, have opened the facility at their Huddersfield Road premises.

Mayor of Kirklees Coun Martyn Bolt (Con, Mirfield) cut the ribbon. Also there were members of the Friends of Oakwell Hall group.

They recently received £20,000 from PPG’s Global Charitable Contributions project, which awards grants for community schemes.

The cash is given for educational, cultural, arts and civic events and some of it is already being used for activities at Oakwell Hall.

A recent Junior Festival of Brass event attracted more than 200 people to hear acts like the Scissett Youth Band.

Further brass band concerts are to be held on Sunday July 28, Sunday August 11 and Sunday September 1.

The funds will also pay for a chimney at the Grade I listed Elizabethan manor house’s to be repaired later this year.

Steve Pocock, of PPG, said: “It’s been wonderful to open our visitor centre and hear how Oakwell Hall is to benefit from the money we donated.

“I’ve no doubt our staff will take great pride in knowing the park PPG has played in Oakwell Hall’s future.”
