New fashion scheme could be just the job

BUDDING fashionistas have the chance to take part in an exciting new project, get some work experience and find out how a fashion show is put together thanks to a local scheme for the unemployed.
Passion 4 Fashion Kirklees is an new initiative aimed at helping outofwork people with an interest in fashion to gain a variety of skills – from clothing design and sewing to budgeting and teamwork, with the aim of helping them find their way into employment or further training.
Starting on Monday up to 80 participants will attend a series of five workshops over six weeks, and places are still available in Batley and Dewsbury.
Working with local designers participants will learn about fashion design, receive expert tuition and coaching and be encouraged as they design and create their own catwalk outfit using clothes found in charity shops, on a budget of just £20 per person.
Advisers from Jobcentre Plus, Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing and the Citizens Advice Bureau will also be on hand to talk about finding paid work and additional training, and offer advice on personal finances, debt management and the benefits of credit unions.
Advisors will undertake individual assessments, provide guidance on how to prepare CVs and help participants make the most of their new skills.
The project will culminate in a fantastic fashion show at Huddersfield Town Hall on April 26 opened by Kirklees Mayor Coun Eric Firth.
Coun Jean Calvert, Cabinet member for Health, Wellbeing and Communities, said: “Passion 4 Fashion gives local people the chance to take part in something new and exciting ñ itís not every day that you get to model in a fashion show!
“The participants will also gain skills which will stay with them in the long term and hopefully help them gain employment or training opportunities in the future.”
Places are still available at workshops running in Dewsbury and Batley, and anyone with an interest in fashion who is over 16 and currently out of work can get in touch with Valerie Wartelle on 01484 221709 or email area.neighbourhoodteam@ kirklees.gov.uk.
