A CHEF hopes to expand a Gomersal pub’s successful takeaway Sunday lunch all through the week.
Maggie Beddows, 52, brought the initial idea with her when she joined the California Inn two months ago.
The pub has done roaring trade since in taking roast beef, Yorkshire pudding and all the trimmings to people’s homes.
Areas served include Liversedge, Mirfield, Thornhill and Batley up to 5.30pm on Sundays.
Also on the menu are meat and potato pie, vegetarian options and desserts such as treacle sponge.
All of it is home cooked and locally sourced, with suppliers including a butcher in Earlsheaton and traders on Dewsbury Market.
The idea has proved such a hit that Maggie, who has worked in catering for 20 years, wants to expand.
She not only hopes to offer a daily service but wants to deliver to community centres so groups can enjoy a meal together.
Inspiration came from the joy older people have in receiving their takeaway Sunday lunch.
Maggie, a mother of five from Heckmondwike, said: “There are many older people who can no longer cook at home or go out much.”
Offering the service to community centres would give people the chance to eat with friends.
The menu would be expanded to cover other traditional meals such as liver and onions.
The pub, on Oxford Road, recently ran a healthly eating voucher scheme with PJ’s Gym in Cleckheaton.
Maggie was chef at Kirklees College in Dewsbury for six years until February this year.
She said: “Everything was about persuading students to ditch their cheese and chips for something healthier.”
Maggie brings the same passion for home-cooked healthy meals to the California Inn.
Her Sunday lunches to go are also popular with others – including hungover party-goers.
She said: “There’s a lot of takeaways, and they do their thing, but quite a lot of people don’t want to wait for them to open.”
Sunday lunch orders can be taken up to 5.30pm from Gomersal, Dewsbury Moor and Liversedge.
Those living elsewhere, including as far as Ossett, can order up to 5pm.
