Former journalist lays down the law

A FORMER journalist who later trained as a solicitor has been elected as president of Dewsbury and District Law Society.
Bernard Disken is the senior partner of Disken and Co in Bond Street, Dewsbury.
Mr Disken said: “I would like to pay tribute to my predecessor Richard Walker for taking the society forward in the last year.
“The local law society has a vital role in protecting solicitors and their clients against big business.”
Mr Disken qualified as a solicitor in 1993 after previously working as a reporter and subeditor for two local newspapers.
He is also secretary of Dewsbury Road Runners and vicechairman of Dewsbury Liberal Democrats.
Other officers elected at the society’s annual meeting were: vicepresident, Andrew Hill (Hellewell Pasley and Brewer, Birstall); secretary, Joseph McCullough (Disken and Co); treasurer, Richard Walker (Stanley Hays, Heckmondwike); and Parliamentary liaison and public relations officer, Bernard Disken.
Elected auditors were Thomas Disken (Disken and Co) and Paul Normandale (Inesons, Cleckheaton).
Dewsbury and District Law Society covers Dewsbury, Mirfield, Batley, Heckmondwike, Cleckheaton, Liversedge, Morley and Ossett.
