California has soul once again

A 22YEAROLD has had her hands full after becoming one of the youngest pub managers in the region.
Former barmaid Elisia Baldev, the new manager of Gomersal’s California Inn, was handed the keys but found the pub in need of major refurbishment before it could reopen.
Elisia, from Oakworth near Keighley, said: “When we first went into the pub it stank of cats and all the furniture was stolen, right down to the bottle coolers behind the bar.
“The carpets were completely filthy and the curtains had been ripped off the rails. I'm not surprised nobody wanted to come here. I knew I had my hands full.”
Elisia spent over a month decorating, sourcing new furniture and fumigating the premises. After a £13,000 refurbishment, the pub's doors opened in midOctober and now Elisia wants to get the California Inn back on the local map by creating a warm, welcoming and friendly atmosphere.
She said: "It’s now totally transformed. Itís really contemporary but we have not taken away the traditional features. The customers seem to really like the new look."
Elisia has also planned a series of events to increase popularity and raise money for charity at the same time.
Last week she held children’s and adults’ Halloween discos and last night (Thurs) Batley and Spen MP Mike Wood was due to pour a pint behind the bar as part of British Pub Week.
Tonight (Fri) November 4 there will be bonfire disco followed by a Bonfire Night fireworks display on Saturday to raise funds for Kirkwood Hospice.
