Ann's Angle

It’s one of the most famous theatres in the world – the London Palladium, home of course to the great ‘Sunday Night at the London Palladium’ TV show. Very soon it will have a Mirfield connection, and that is all I am teasing you with for now ... read about it here, in my column at The Press.

Former Coronation Street actress Sherrie Hewson tells me that she never ate the famous hotpots on the show, made by Betty Turpin, as “they were all covered in glaze to keep them looking camera-fresh and ready for filming. I did find out the hard way of course by trying to eat it...”

There was a huge turnout for a musical first staged 35 years ago, the brilliant ‘Tell Me On A Sunday’ by Don Black and Andrew Lloyd Webber at the Duchess Theatre, where the audience member Vanessa Feltz told me: “You know Ann, I am still dancing. After my stint on Strictly Come Dancing I fell in love with it all, and it’s been such fun.” So you see, some still do carry on after the show ….

The Paradise was the rival show to ITV’s highly-rated Mr Selfridge, but BBC bosses have decided to axe the prime-time period drama after just two series. Ratings for the show, which launched in September 2012 and centred around a department store’s charismatic owner, were initially high for the programme, but slipped to just over five million for series two.

Ant and Dec have said that they could be taking Saturday Night Takeaway Stateside if talks with TV bosses come off. The Geordie duo told me that they were thinking of having another go at breaking America with their hit Saturday evening show.

Benidorm star Joan Collins has revealed that she turned down a role in Goldfinger. Yet Bond bosses can’t find any evidence of such an offer to date, and would welcome Joan’s letter of an offer to verify the story...

The rise to fame of Cilla Black is to be explored in an ITV drama series starring Sheridan Smith. The singer-turned-presenter will have her early years starting out in Liverpool covered, and Cilla tells me: “It’s terrifying in a way as you have to dig deep back in the mind to remember all kinds of things that happened over 50 years ago.”

Best Known now for hosting her ITV show ‘Light Lunch’, Melanie Sykes is launching her own keep fit equipment line. She tells me: “I am so into keep fit yet there was nothing glamorous for girls to use, so now there is.”

Anthea Turner recently completed in the reality TV show ‘The Jump’ but the kick start she had hoped for with her TV career has failed to take off. She admits: “It’s kind of skidded away again, but I did enjoy the experience of the show for sure.”

Mr Selfridge is to return for a third series. The period drama, fronted by Jeremy Piven, has been recommissioned by ITV and this time around we will see some more big-name stars, including one from America, which helps sell the series back to the lucrative US market

Claudia Winkelman, who has a unique look to say the least, has taken the hint and decided to trim her fringe. She told me: “Actually my producer told me to do it, so I conformed. I am a messy dresser I know that, but I just go with what makes me look good, not for what TV people should think.”

EastEnders star Charlie Brooks is preparing to launch a new stage school in Surrey. The actress, who is known for her role as Janine Butcher on the BBC soap, is set to join forces with her friend Mark Jermin to open a new performing arts school.

Former EastEnders star Jamie Foreman has revealed that he misses playing Derek Branning. The actor starred as villain Derek from 2011 to Christmas 2012 on the BBC One soap. He told me that he would like to have had time to develop the character further. “But now I am killed off, there is no chance of that is there,” he laughed.

Mrs Brown’s Boys will reportedly be made into a cartoon later this year. The BBC One sitcom’s latest version is expected to enter production in the summer.

Mr Selfridge star Katherine Kelly seems very reticent to discuss her move into pop with a low-charting Coronation Street musical song. “I have wiped that from my memory,” she told a friend...

TV blonde Gaby Roslin tells me that she won’t be appearing in Strictly Come Dancing anytime soon. She said: “I have been approached many times and I love the show, but it’s the sort of show I am not very good at appearing on, to be honest. I never miss an episode though, it’s such great fun.”

Gareth Gates is now back with The Big Reunion, and admits that he has not kept in touch with his one-time mentor Simon Cowell. “I was dropped from his label, and once that happens you are pretty much out of the picture to be frank,” he confesses.
