They should resign over 'fiasco'...
A TORY councillor has said there should be resignations at Kirklees Council over the Castle Hall “fiasco”.
The council’s deputy Tory leader Coun Martyn Bolt welcomed the decision on Castle Hall but said: “I am saddened it has taken 12 months longer than it needed to.”
Coun Bolt was part of the Conservative administration which wanted to shut Castle Hall - but then changed its mind after a massive public outcry.
The Tories were ready to hold a referendum and ditch the plan but it was resurrected by the Lib Dems and Labour.
“We have to ask how much this fiasco has cost,” said Coun Bolt. “There was a five-hour Cabinet meeting, seven-hour scrutiny and a marathon Cabinet meeting in Batley.
“Officers told me last year there was no ‘Plan B’ and I hope Labour’s prejudice against Mirfield hasn’t worked against us because we could lose the entire £200m for North Kirklees.
“If it has lost this money then resignations should follow.”
Former Tory councillor Khizar Iqbal, who is standing as an independent in Dewsbury and Mirfield at the General Election, said: “This is a failure all round by Labour and throws the whole BSF programme for North Kirklees into disarray.
“The schools adjudicator has shown the common sense that Kirklees didn’t.”
