MFG happy over the outcome too ...
MOST of the celebrations may have been at Castle Hall this week but neighbouring Mirfield Free Grammar was also a happy place to be.
Just as Castle Hall was vehemently opposed to its closure, so were parents and staff at MFG. Closing Castle Hall would have meant only one high school for Mirfield and Ravensthorpe, and the student roll at MFG would have risen from 1,090 to 1,500.
Quite how the MFG site could have been extended - or how the surrounding road network would have coped - was never fully explained.
A meeting with independent adjudicator Canon Richard Lindley attracted some 600 people to MFG, a night after a similar number attended at Castle Hall.
Mrs Lorraine Barker, principal at MFG, was just as delighted as her counterpart Andy Pugh at Castle Hall and said: “This decision ensures that MFG can continue to provide the outstanding education it currently offers.”
She sent her “heartfelt thanks” to all those involved and added: “Obviously this is a major decision which will be noticed nationally and means that educational arguments have won the day.”
