Siblings on a music quest...
TWO brothers are aiming to bring “royalty-free” radio to North Kirklees and promote up-and-coming bands at the same time.
Gary and Colin Wilkinson run Royalty Free Music Radio, a 24/7 internet-based station which broadcasts nationally.
Now the brothers want to localise, creating a new station for North Kirklees.
Colin, 56, set up the business and has recently been joined by Dewsbury-based Gary, 47, who works for a Ravensthorpe bed company.
The duo employ freelance DJs to record shows using music from unsigned bands.
The idea behind RFM Radio is that shops, businesses and factories can tune in free of charge for their staff and customers.
Playing conventional radio stations in a workplace needs a costly licence from the Performing Rights Society (PRS).
The PRS target businesses and can claim thousands of pounds a year in royalty payments from large employers.
Colin said: “Many businesses refuse to pay for a licence, which is needed by law, and just switch off the music.
“With RFM Radio we only use unsigned bands so there are no royalties to pay and the band gets airtime which they wouldn’t otherwise have.”
Music on the station is Radio 2-style easy listening but Gary said: “The DJs are very good and the music we play shows there is some great talent out there just waiting to be discovered.”
Anyone wanting to play the station just clicks on www.rfmradio.co.uk. It can be played through speakers in a shop or factory via a computer or on a wi-fi radio.
The programmes are pre-recorded and the station broadcasts 24 hours a day.
“What we need to do now is spread the word and get more and more people listening,” said Gary. “We want this to take off.”
